Heart Attacks in Public Places

It is estimated that anywhere from 200,000 to 500,000 Americans suffer a cardiac arrest each year. If left untreated for more than five minutes, brain injury may occur, so immediate response is of the utmost importance when someone suffers a cardiac arrest.

Because time is of the essence following a cardiac event, devices called “Automated external defibrillators” (AED) are now available in many public places where heart attacks are known to happen such as theme parks, sports venues, shopping malls, and golf courses. AEDs are places where older people tend to gather; these devices can be used by lay people. They are usually brightly colored and very easy to locate. Ideally, someone using one should have received training, but this is usually not the case. Typically, when these protective cases are opened and the defibrillator is removed, a buzzer will sound, which alerts staff that an AED is in use; trained emergency medical personnel can then be summoned, and chances for saving a life are greatly increased has the AED not been available.

It is estimated that as many as 50,000 lives can be saved each year by having AEDs available in many public places.
