16 year old Wes Leonard was a star athlete at Fennville High in Southfield, Michigan. After scoring the winning shot during overtime during a tied basketball game, Wes collapsed in front of fans. It was determined later that he suffered from cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart.
In Michigan, There is pending legislation that would require all public schools to have an AED, an automatic defibrillator. Had a defibrillator such as this been applied to Wes during the first few minutes of his collapse, he may have been saved. Fennville had one of these AED units, but by the time they tried to apply it, it was too late. And the AED wasn't working properly.
Deaths such as Wes Leonard's are particularly tragic. He was a young, vibrant althete. Wes' mom is pushing to raise funds to have properly functioning defibrillators in all Michigan public schools so that perhaps another parent will not have to suffer as she has.
The question on everyone's mind now is, "Could he have been saved?".
