Speed is a leading cause of
accidents in West Palm Beach. In 2009, exceeding the speed limit or travelling at an unsafe speed was
a contributing factor in 4,875 Florida accidents. In fact, in 2009 Florida
was ranked fourth in the country for speed-related traffic fatalities
with 479 deaths.
Thirty-four of these high speed accident fatalities were in Palm Beach County.
Why is speeding so dangerous?
1. It is more difficult to avoid an accident if you are driving at high
speed. Increasing speed decreases reaction time. So, if something unexpected
happens on the road ahead of you, you have less time to react. A driver
who is speeding is less likely to make safe driving choices and decisions.
2. When driving at high speeds, a driver has a reduced visual field and
restricted peripheral vision.
3. A driver who speeds in a residential area is less likely to spot pedestrians,
especially children who are playing in streets or riding bikes. This can
cause tragic pedestrian accidents.
4. High speeds are hard on vehicles and may compromise their safety. High
speed places a greater than normal strain on tires and brakes. This increases
which increases the risk of failure and, in turn, the risk of an accident.
5. Safety devices such as air bags and safety belts are less effective
at high speeds.
6. Physics. Let’s get technical for a minute; the kinetic energy
in a moving car is equal to the mass of the car multiplied by the square
of the velocity divided by two. In plain English, this means that a car
travelling at high speed has more stored energy than a car travelling
at low speed. When the car suddenly crashes, all that kinetic energy is
released in the force of the impact. So at higher speed, a car crashes
with more force and more damage occurs than at low speeds.
7. More physics. People inside the vehicle are subject to the same laws
of physics. Since they are travelling at the speed of the car and when
it crashes, they hit with more force. So, high speed accidents tend to
cause more serious injuries.
