If you are an avid cyclist and don’t mind colder temperatures and
several inches of snow on the ground for a good chunk of the year, then
Minneapolis, MN might be your dream come true. A recent survey from real-estate
giant Redfin has concluded that the Minnesota metropolis is the best major
city for cyclists in the United States.
Redfin agent James Garry stated: “Biking is central to the healthy Minneapolis lifestyle and to a
lot of people’s decisions about where to live in and around the
The survey, which factors in local topography, cycling-specific infrastructure,
road layout, and cycling culture, awarded each city a total “Bike
Score.” The results indicate the cities which are not only the most
receptive and enjoyable for cyclists, but also the safest and frequently
are amongst the lowest in the nation in bicycle accident injuries. The
survey itself was divided into two categories, with Minneapolis being
deemed the best large-population city in the country for cyclists with
a score of 81.3.
Rounding out the top-five major population centers in the country are San
Francisco, CA (75.1), Portland, OR (72.0), Denver, CO (71.3), and Boston,
College towns also fared particularly well on the list of cities including
all population sizes, as their usually large investment in infrastructure
dedicated to cycling transportation. The top five cities of all sizes
were (in order) Cambridge, MA; Davis, CA; Berkeley, CA; Boulder, CO; and
Santa Cruz; CA. These cities are often filled with students who utilize
this cycling-friendly infrastructure to transport themselves, increasing
their scores significantly.
Cycling in Florida Cities
For our cities here in Florida, we finished somewhat on both ends of the
spectrum. At the top of the list in Florida, Gainesville scored particularly
well, earning a 70.6 Bike Score, actually beating out Boston by 0.3 points,
and finishing 23rd in its first year on the complete list of ranked cities. Miami finished
second-best in the state and 57th overall with a 59.7 score, and St. Petersburg did well at 70th, scoring 56.1. However, Florida also has two cities down near the bottom
of the list, with Jacksonville scoring only a 39.5 and the state capital
Tallahassee earning a measly 35.3, finishing 149th of the 154 ranked cities.
While some cities are certainly safer and more optimized for cyclists than
others, no city is immune to cycling accidents, which can cause serious
injuries. If you hare injured in a cycling accident, a West Palm Beach
bike accident lawyer may be able to assist you in recovering compensation.
