The year of headaches has only gotten worse for electronic manufacturing
giant Samsung, who have now expanded their recalls to include household
appliances, and may be adding additional cell phone models soon as well.
The headache began when Samsung issued a recall for all units of the Galaxy
Note 7 cell phone after the batteries in the devices began overheating,
catching fire, and even exploding in rare cases, causing potentially serious
injury. There are many documented cases of this occurring, and despite
the company urging consumers to bring them in to have them replaced, there
are still a few units still around.
This has prompted extreme measures from Samsung, who announced that they
would make all remaining impacted units inoperable entirely through an
over-the-air update that would prevent the phones from charging at all.
Between this and a total ban of the devices on all aircraft in the United
States, the phones should go extinct within a month or so.
The cell phone woes have continued to additional models as well. Other
reports have included numerous Galaxy S7 Edge units, and even
a Galaxy J5 unexpectedly bursting into flames. Several instances have resulted in injuries, with one reported case even
resulting in severe third-degree burns.
Washing Machines Get In on the Act
Starting at the end of October, the electronics giant was forced to
issue a recall of more than 2.8 million washing machine units due to an explosion hazard. According to Samsung, the units have the ability
to lose their balance during the “high-speed” spin cycle,
vibrate excessively, and then explode in very rare cases. Most often,
the imbalanced drums wind up ripping the top off the unit entirely.
Thankfully for Samsung, they’re not the only appliance company facing
some trouble with top-loading washers this year. GE was forced to issue
an urgent recall for three different models back in September after more
than 70 different reports of the washer’s internal components bursting
Be sure to do your research if you’re purchasing a washer or a cell
phone as a gift this holiday season.
