Labor Day weekend is traditionally seen as a time for barbecues with friends,
an extra day off of work, and one last celebration of the end of summer
(never mind the forecast of rain this Monday). However, Labor Day is also
historically one of the most dangerous holidays of the year on our roads.
In a recent podcast, Boca Raton attorney Joe Osborne brought up some sobering statistics.
The National Safety Council estimates that over the last five years, there
have been an average of 375 traffic fatalities every Labor Day weekend.
The number of those injured is in fact far higher.
What causes these accidents? Due to the celebratory nature of this holiday,
alcohol is usually involved with proceedings and a number of drivers get
behind the wheel of their cars while intoxicated. The NSC estimates that
of all of the fatal accidents each year, about 37% of them involve a driver
intoxicated by alcohol.
Florida is part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”
campaign, which aims to curtail drunk driving and eliminate fatalities
from what otherwise could have been preventable accidents. Additionally,
police annually step up their presence significantly over this weekend
to try to curtail the number of drunk drivers on the road. Miami police
have even begun to
step up their presence in the water as well as on the roads for this weekend.
