Does Your Doctor Have a History of Medical Malpractice in Florida?

If given the choice, would you choose to be operated on by a surgeon who had been sued for medical malpractice multiple times? Of course not. However, patients are not always aware of their surgeon's past mistakes. Consider the story of Maribeth Chase. This 77-year-old woman did not know that the neurosurgeon performing her operation had been sued at least 16 times for making medical errors. She died from complications after a relatively simple operation.

Many Florida doctors remain licensed in good standing and practice despite a history of medical errors. How can you avoid becoming the next Florida medical malpractice victim?

Only 17 states make doctors' malpractice histories publically available on their medical boards' websites. Florida is not one of those states. However, Florida medical malpractice attorney Craig Goldenfarb says that you can investigate your doctor. Here's how:

  1. Find out if your doctor is licensed. Look up your doctor on the Florida Department of Health's website.
  2. Click on "practitioner profile." Click on "proceedings and actions" for information about criminal offenses and disciplinary actions. Keep in mind, that much of the information on this site is self-reported.
  3. Also check the Florida Department of Financial Services website to see if the doctor has paid any malpractice claims in the past.
