SUV's have a bad reputation. They are thought to be prone to rollover accidents which are among the deadliest of Florida vehicle accidents. However, new research shows this reputation is no longer deserved. In fact, electronic stability control (ESC) has not only eliminated much of the rollover risk, but it has also made SUV's among the safest vehicles on the road.
Last month, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released the results of a study that looked at driver death rates by vehicle type in vehicles from 2005-2008 model years. Minivans have the best safety record with a death rate of 25 driver deaths per million registered vehicles. SUVs are in second place with a death rate of 28 driver deaths per million registered vehicles. This is a whopping 66% decrease from the driver death rate of 82 per million vehicles for 1999-2002 models.
Why the change? With the rollover risk reduced, SUVs are now safer than cars because their bigger size and weight offer greater protection to occupants in a
West Palm Beach car crash.
How did cars do in comparison? The average death rate for car drivers is 56 per million, but size matters. Four-door minicars have a death rate of 82 per million compared to a death rate of 46 per million for very large 4-door cars.
