Medical Emergency Causes Fatal Jupiter Car Crash

A Sunrise resident is dead and a police officer is injured after a medical emergency caused on accident on the Florida Turnpike.
 
The Jupiter traffic accident occurred at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 12. Fifty-four-year-old William Donald Veliky was driving southbound in the Florida Turnpike's left lane when he suffered a heart attack.  Veliky lost control of his Ford Transit van and hit the interior concrete wall of the turnpike.  The van continued to travel along the wall until a tire blew.  It veered right and crashed into a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser that was parked on the right shoulder of the road.
 
The front fender of the police cruiser was torn off, but the 56-year-old trooper inside the vehicle was not injured. He was taken to Jupiter Medical Center for screening and observation.
 
Veliky died at the scene.
 
The southbound lanes of the turnpike were closed for nearly four hours as emergency crews cleared the wreckage.
