Recently, I've noticed several news stories about pedestrians who have been killed in
West Palm Beach car crashes. In fact, pedestrian accidents in South Florida are increasing. Nationwide, the number of pedestrian accident fatalities in January through June increased from 1,884 in 2009 to 1,891 in 2010. The data was obtained from National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) data.
The NHTSA statistics are alarming because overall traffic fatalities dropped 8 percent during the same time period and the increase comes after four years of pedestrian fatality decreases. It is especially alarming because the increase occurred in only a handful of states. Only California, New York, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Oklahoma, Oregon and North Carolina had an increase in pedestrian fatalities. Some of these fatalities are blamed on intoxicants, distracted driving, distracted walkers, head phones and cell phones.
Florida leads the nation in pedestrian accidents. Learn how these accidents can be prevented in our article: "
