Brain Injury Common Causes
Port St. Lucie, Florida
Our brains are our most-protected organ, and for good reason. Our brains are “command central” for our entire body. Although the skull offers a thick layer of bony protection, even it cannot protect the brain from every type of injury. When an auto accident or other incident is severe enough to cause a brain injury, it is severe enough to alter every aspect of the victim’s life and the lives of people close to him.
When another person’s negligence is responsible for so great a loss to you, they are responsible to compensate you for that loss. Port St. Lucie brain injury attorney Craig Goldenfarb, P.A. urges you to seek medical help and legal counsel immediately because time is of the essence in such cases.
Common causes of brain injury can be categorized many ways for medical purposes, but two specific concepts help clarify legal purposes: traumatic brain injuries and acquired brain injuries.
Traumatic Brain Injuries
When the brain is injured from a direct blow to the head, the injury is said to be a traumatic brain injury. Damage from such brain injuries is localized, with injury to nerves in a specific location of the brain. Examples of traumatic brain injuries include accidents such as motor vehicle crashes, sports injuries or slip-and-fall injuries, and violent acts of abuse, shaken baby syndrome, or those inflicted by weapons.
Acquired Brain Injuries
When a brain injury results after or during birth (as compared to congenital or disease related brain injuries) and results in widespread damage to the brain cells, it is referred to as an acquired brain injury. One of the most common causes of this type of damage to brain cells is lack of oxygen.
Any accident such as near-drowning, crushed chest or choking, or an event such as a heart attack or stroke that interrupts oxygen availability to the brain can result in death of brain cells. These would also include traumatic birth events, failure to notice fetal distress or other medical malpractice that leave infants with lifelong disabilities, such as cerebral palsy.
Drugs, both legal and illegal, chemicals, or many substances found in ordinary products can cause an acquired brain injury. Whether a brain injury was caused by an electrical shock, exposure to toxic chemicals, or an accident in the workplace or elsewhere, the common denominator is widespread brain cell destruction. Such destruction is permanent and irreversible. These brain cells will not heal, nor will new ones replace them.
