2009 Florida Car Crash Fatality Statistics

When reading Florida car crash statistics, it is important to remember that the numbers represent people. Of those killed, 1,099 (43%) were drivers, 453 (17.7%) were passengers, 413 (16.1%) were motorcyclists, 466 (18.2%) were pedestrians, and 107 (4.2%) were motorcyclists.

Twenty-one victims were children under age five.

Rollovers are the most dangerous type of car crash. Rollover crashes made up 35.2% of all fatal accidents in Florida in 2009. A total of 533 vehicles were involved in 2009 fatal Florida rollover crashes.

Seat belts have been proven to save lives; 846 Florida lives may have been saved if the victims had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Thirty-six percent of fatal Florida car crashes in 2009 were alcohol-related.
