A 22-year-old woman slips and falls on the slick pavement of an amusement park and twists her ankle. The pain stimulates a hormonal/metabolic response that temporarily numbs her to the pain and leads her to believe that she is “not that hurt after all.” So instead of taking a picture of where she slipped, taking statements from people around her, and generally employing post-injury “best practices,” she leaves the park and goes home to nurse her wounds. A week later, she decides to see her doctor, who diagnoses a torn ligament and a broken bone in her ankle.
A 64-year-old woman visiting her mother at a nursing home trips on a broken step and hits her head on the ground. Other than a mild headache, she feels fine. However, two or three weeks later, her husband notices that she is having some serious cognitive difficulties and memory problems. It turns out that the slip and fall caused a minor cerebral hemorrhage.
A 53-year-old man slips and falls on an acquaintance’s steps and wrenches his lower back. Out of embarrassment, he refuses to say anything or get help. But the injury creates a serious musculoskeletal problem, which ultimately leads to long-term health consequences.
