Are you considering a private nursing home for your loved one? It would seem that privately-owned nursing homes would provide higher quality care for elderly residents; however, a new report released by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) says that - while private homes do spend more money - they also average a higher number of deficiencies than publically funded nursing homes.
The report, titled "Nursing Homes: Private Investment Homes Sometimes Differed from Others in Deficiencies, Staffing, and Financial Performance," found that, on average, private nursing homes have higher facilities expenses. According to the GAO, facilities try to make themselves more attractive to those who can pay their fees through staffing choices and well-maintained, up-to-date facilities. Staff in privately funded homes is more likely to include registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants. A highly trained staff means that more money is spent on wages.
The GAO study found that, overall, there was less staff in the privately owned facilities and - despite the well-maintained facilities - privately-owned nursing homes had higher deficiency ratings. Many deficiencies were serious, with the potential to cause harm to residents.
