A visitor from Wisconsin has drowned after being caught in a fast-moving current while snorkeling in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Florida drowning accident occurred on Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Forty-six-year-old William Potrykus, Jr. of Onalaska, Wisconsin, was visiting relatives in Florida. Potrykus, his fiancée and one other person were snorkeling in the Gulf of Mexico near Destin. The three snorkelers were caught on a fast-moving current. One person was rescued by a pontoon boat as it passed by, another made it to shore on his own. Potrykus drowned. His body was found by a lifeguard in water 20 feet deep. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Snorkeling is a simple, but dangerous activity. Every year, hundreds die in Florida snorkeling accidents. Many times these accidents occur because of poor training or faulty equipment.
The Florida drowning attorneys at the Law Offices of Craig Goldenfarb would like to offer our condolences to the family and fiancée of William Potrykus, Jr.
