More West Palm Beach Pedestrian Accidents; Fewer Fatal FL Car Crashes

Posted on Oct 15, 2011

The good news is that the overall Florida traffic accident fatality rate has dropped to an all-time low; the bad news is that deaths from Florida pedestrian accidents are increasing.

According to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were 2,444 traffic deaths in Florida in 2010. The traffic fatality rate in Florida has decreased to 1.25 deaths for every 100 million miles.

While motorcycle, bicycle, and teen car accident deaths also declined last year, the number of pedestrian deaths increased by 3.5 percent. In fact, 499 people, many of them children, died last year in Florida pedestrian accidents.

Recently, two children were involved in pedestrian accidents in Palm Beach County. On September 27, 2011, a 7-year-old girl was hit by an SUV as she ran to catch her school bus. She sustained a broken hip and a concussion. Thankfully, she is expected to make a full recovery.

A 3-year-old boy wasn't so lucky. The boy was on 64th Drive South in West Palm Beach when he was struck by a truck. He died from his injuries.
