Speed Limit Reduced After Palm Beach County Bus Accident Death

Posted on Jul 12, 2011

Last October, 17-year-old Ryan Garcia was hit and injured by a school bus when he crossed Seminole Pratt-Whitney Road just north of Seminole Ridge High School.  Ryan survived the Florida pedestrian accident and, in December, Ryan, the Garcia's family, other parents, and elected officials, marched along the road with signs asking for a change in the speed zone in order to make the area safer for kids who are walking to school.

Palm Beach County will install flashing lights and a 20 mph school speed limit zone that will be in effect when students arrive in the morning at when school dismisses in the afternoon. Seminole Pratt Whitney Road normally has a 45 mph speed limit.  The changes should be in place by the first day of school on August 22.

Palm Beach County will also extend the sidewalk on the east side of Seminole Pratt Whitney Road about 2 miles north to Orange Boulevard.  It currently only extends one-third of a mile.  This change should help protect the safety of teens that walk to school. Students who live within a two-mile radius of the school do not get bus service and are vulnerable to pedestrian accidents.

County commissioners hired engineers to study the roads around other high schools in the county to see if any others need speed zones or other safety measures.  As a result, speed zones are planned for West Boca Raton High School and John I. Leonard High School in Greenacres.
