Tired of high gas prices?
Gas is about $3.90 a gallon in West Palm Beach and is expected to hit
$4 a gallon by the end of the summer. High gas prices mean higher price
tags for food and other goods at a time when many families are already
struggling. But, there may be one positive consequence to high gas prices.
A new study by Mississippi State University's Social Science Research
Center found that as gas prices rise, auto accidents decrease - even drunk
driving accidents. So although gas prices are high, our little bit of
good news is that roads may be safer for West Palm Beach drivers.
The study was published last month in the Journal of Safety Research and
Accident Analysis and Prevention. The study analyzed all traffic crashes
in Mississippi between April 2004 and December 2008. The researchers compared
gas prices to traffic safety statistics and looked at a range of factors
related to car accidents in the state of Mississippi. These factors included
age, gender and race.
The scientists found that an increase in gas prices has both short-term
and intermediate-term effects on the number of car accidents. For example,
in months when gas prices are high, there are fewer teen-driver car crashes.
This may be because younger drivers are unable to spend as much on gas.
Older drivers show a decrease in car crashes over a longer period of about
one year from a gas price spike. Perhaps accidents decreased as commuters
sought alternatives such as car-pooling or public transit.
The research also found a significant correlation between higher gas prices
and a reduced frequency of
High gas prices are hard on the budget, but a car accident can devastate
a bank account. If you have been
injured in a West Palm Beach car crash, you may have medical bills, therapy costs, car repairs, higher insurance
premiums and time missed from work. These costs can add up to thousands
of dollars. If someone else is at fault for the accident, you shouldn't
have to pay. An
