The month of July has seen a large number of products recalled by manufacturers
due to safety defects that could result in product liability lawsuits.
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, who posts many of
the recalls on their website, has listed 24 major recalls since the first
of the month. If you have been injured or fallen ill as a result of a
poorly-manufactured or defective product, it is important that you reach
out to a West Palm Beach product liability attorney as soon as possible.
Since the beginning of the month nearly every manufacturer, including giants
Razor, Overstock.com, Digital Gadgets, and PTX Performance, has issued
a recall on the popular gift from last Christmas, affecting millions of
these two-wheeled scooter units.
The battery pack these devices were built with, a lithium-ion type power
cell, has been found to be prone to overheating, causing battery leakage,
fires, and even explosions in extreme cases. Some of these cases have
been well-documented by angry consumers when their gifts promptly started
catching fire or overheating not long after they were even opened. As
a result, consumers have been encouraged to immediately stop using these
devices until they can exchange it.
Solution: Check out the recent recalls on the CPSC website to find the
recall notice from your specific manufacturer. The notice will have instructions
on how to get ahold of your hoverboard’s manufacturer, who will
then replace it with one that has been UL-certified.
Ikea Safety Gate
Popular furniture and home décor manufacturer Ikea has announced
a recall on its
PATRULL line of safety gates as the extensions may open unexpectedly, resulting in a significant fall
hazard. The recall will affect over 100,000 units sold across the United
States and Canada.
Solution: Contact Ikea by phone or online and arrange for a refund, or
return the gates to your nearest Ikea store and receive a full refund
for the original purchase price of your gate.
Auto manufacturers are constantly reviewing the performance of their vehicles,
and reports of a failing part can frequently lead to a recall. The following
is a list of recalls for some of the most common vehicles on the roads.
If your vehicle is listed here, contact your nearest dealer as soon as
possible to determine when the recall services will begin and to schedule
an appointment. The dealer will perform the repair free of charge.
Chrysler has recalled certain
2017 model year Pacifica vehicles due to a weak overhead seatbelt stow clip, which will prevent
seatbelt use in the center seats of the second and rear rows if it fails.
Recall number: S42
Toyota has recalled
2010-2012 Prius, 2010 and 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid, and 2011-2012 Lexus CT200h vehicles due to an airbag manufacturing defect that may cause part of
the inflator to eject into the passenger cabin upon impact. This significantly
increases injury risk in an accident. The recall is expected to begin
July 25. Recall number: Toyota G0U, Lexus GLJ
Nissan has recalled
2016 Sentra model sedans manufactured in April of this year due to an engine room
harness having a pin that is too large to maintain connection to the engine
control unit. A failed connection will prevent the vehicle from starting,
or cause the engine to cut out unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a
crash. The recall is expected to begin on August 26.
Ford has recalled certain
2015-2016 Focus Electric vehicles that are at risk of a transmission pinion gear shaft overheating
and fracturing. If this pinion fractures, the vehicle cannot be put into
its parking gear, dramatically increasing the risk of a crash. The recall
is expected to begin on July 25. Recall number: 16S28
Ford has also recalled
2016 Explorer and F-150 vehicles equipped with manual recline drivers’ seats. The welding
on the seat frame may be insufficient to meet federal safety standards,
and therefore may not adequately restrain the driver during a crash. If
necessary, Ford will replace the entire seat back frame free of charge.
The recall is expected to begin on August 15. Recall number: 16C11.
