Car accidents, especially high-speed crashes are scary events. Often, an accident happens
in what seems like a split second and it takes us by surprise. Our bodies
are flooded with adrenaline, the hormone responsible for the fight or
flight response. As a result, our heart is racing, our breathing speeds
up and pain –
is temporarily masked.
Because of the adrenaline pumping through our bodies immediately after
a crash, we’ll often think that “we’re fine” and
“not hurt.” Unless we’re bleeding or have a severed
limb, we could easily be tricked into thinking we’re unharmed. But
in reality, we could be suffering from broken bones, internal bleeding,
soft tissue injuries, or a concussion.
Suppose you are in a car crash,
should you see a doctor or a chiropractor? Is one better than the other? Whenever you’re
in a significant crash, you should seek medical attention asap. If you
obviously have broken bones, road rash, a flesh wound, airbag burns, or
a head injury, you should go to the nearest emergency room. But what if
you don’t feel any pain or you’re not sure if you’re hurt?
Even if you don’t feel any pain, at the very least you should see
a chiropractor at your earliest convenience. Once the adrenaline wears
off, you are likely to feel neck stiffness, headaches, neck or back pain,
and experience difficulty moving your neck – these are all common
with car accident cases.
While neck or back injuries may seem “minor,” they can be anything
but. Pain signals something is wrong; it indicates that you’ve been
injured. If you feel any of the below symptoms, you should see a chiropractor
- Neck or back pain
- Restrictions in movement
- Neck or back stiffness
- Numbness or tingling in the extremities
Please be aware that some of the above symptoms can be signs of a concussion
or a herniated disk. For this reason, it’s critical to be seen by
a chiropractor shortly after a car crash (within 24 to 72 hours). In many
cases, it’s advisable to be seen by both a medical doctor
and a chiropractor, especially because regular chiropractic treatment after
a car crash can help alleviate symptoms and help the body heal itself.
