According to the Florida Department of Health, patients of Dr. Michael Barile of the “Bonita Pain Doc” clinic may have been exposed to potentially severe “mycobacterium abscessus” or “mycobacterium massiliense” infections during epidural injections performed by the doctor. The Department has cited at least 10 potential patients who have been potentially affected by infections.
The DOH sent a letter to patients of Dr. Barile on December 6, 2017 warning that they are investigating claims that patients contracted infections due to injections performed after March 1, 2017. The letter describes that affected patients may reside in either Collier or Lee County, Florida.
Dr. Barile’s pain management practice is located in the greater Naples area of Collier County, Florida. According to the clinic’s website, the services provided by the include epidural injections for the neck, thorax, and lower back, as well as injections for nerve blocks, joint blocks, shingles, headaches, and muscle spasms.
